National Facts:
In 2006, 1,029 people died in alcohol-related crashes between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve. (NHTSA, 2006)
In 2006, 17,602 people were killed nationwide in alcohol-related crashes. (NHTSA, 2006)
Alcohol-related crashes cost the American public an estimated $114.3 billion, and people other than the drunk driver paid $71.6 billion of that bill. (Taylor, Miller, and Cox, 2002 )
Beer is the drink most commonly consumed by people stopped for alcohol-impaired driving or involved in alcohol-related crashes.
In fatal crashes in 2006, the highest percentage of drivers with BAC levels of .08 or higher was for drivers ages 21 to 24 (33 percent), followed by ages 25 to 34 (29 percent) and 16 to 19, 35 to 44 (19 percent) (NHTSA, 2006)
Approximately 18 million Americans- 8.5 percent of the population- meet the diagnostic criteria for alcohol abuse or alcoholism.
Only 17 percent of impaired drivers who are injured in crashes are charged and convicted. Eleven percent are charged and not convicted and 72 percent are never charged

In MN, 166 alcohol-related deaths were reported.
In MN, 3,501 people were involved in alcohol-related crashes.
In MN, of 156 fatal alcohol related crashes, 125 involved just one vehicle.
In 2006 8% of minor injures, 13% of moderate injuries, 24% of severe injuries, and 34% of deaths were alcohol-related.
In 2006 21- to 34 year- olds committed fully 53% of the incidents on record.
Males made up 69% of the DWI offenders and female made up 22% of DWI offenders in 2006.
Last year, 124 (75%) of the 166 people who died in alcohol-related crashes were themselves the people whose drinking behavior caused the crash to be classified as alcohol-related.
